After nearly five hours of presentations, public testimony and discussion, the California Coastal Commission voted unanimously to approve the Port of San Diego's application for a Port Master Plan Amendment that will allow for the expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, along with the nearby Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. The decision allows the Port to issue a Coastal Development Permit to the City of San Diego for construction of the $520 million Convention Center project.
San Diego Convention Center Phase III Expansion & Expansion Hotel Project
The San Diego Convention Center Expansion project is on track for a late 2014 groundbreaking, thanks to the California Coastal Commission unanimous vote on October 10, 2013 to approve the Port of San Diego's application for a Port Master Plan Amendment. The amendment will allow for the expansion of the San Diego Convention Center, along with the nearby Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.
The project's Environmental Impact Report was certified by the Board of Port Commissioners on September 19, 2012. A financing plan for the $520 million Convention Center Expansion is in place, pending legal review.
With overwhelming public support, the Port of San Diego remains committed to expanding the San Diego Convention Center and Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel despite a negative recommendation issued Friday by California Coastal Commission staff.
The project team is continuing its ongoing discussions and negotiations with Coastal Commission staff to address their concerns about the project. The Port will present the plan, explaining the numerous ways in which it will benefit the public, to the 11 voting members of the California Coastal Commission on October 10, 2013.
Supporters of the San Diego Convention Center gathered Thursday, September 12, 2013, to unveil nine dramatic new images of the long-awaited regional project.
Elegantly designed and functional, this expansion will meet the needs of Convention Center clients who host large events, smaller events that want the facility concurrently, and prospective clients who would like to hold their meetings in San Diego.
