Martin Luther King Day Parade to March Along Waterfront
Thursday, 12 January 2012
Contact: Dale Frost (619) 686-6461
The San Diego region will celebrate the legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a waterfront parade on Sunday, January 15, 2012. The 32nd annual parade begins at 2 p.m. at the downtown San Diego Bay waterfront.
Musical bands, floats and drill teams will begin marching on North Harbor Drive in front of the County Administration Center and will travel south to Pacific Highway, near Seaport Village.
Parade viewing along the route is free.
The parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest Black fraternity in the United States, which was founded in 1906 at Cornell University. Dr. King was a member of this fraternity.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C., which opened to the public in August 2011, conveys three themes that were central throughout Dr. King's life – democracy justice and hope.
For more information, please visit the official parade web site.
The parade is one of many events that attracts residents and visitors to the waterfront, a goal of the Port of San Diego.
The Port of San Diego was created by the state Legislature in 1962. Since then, it has invested $1.7 billion in public improvements in its five member cities: Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego.
The Port oversees two maritime cargo terminals, a cruise ship terminal, 17 public parks, various wildlife reserves and environmental initiatives, the Harbor Police Department and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub-tenant businesses around San Diego Bay.
