Chula Vista is undergoing a major waterfront transformation through a public-private partnership development that is arguably the largest project of its kind on the West coast.
Stretching 550-acres along the waterfront, the development will include a convention center and 2,000-room hotel, retail shops, entertainment venues and 1,500 condominiums. About half the available acreage will be dedicated for parks, open space and places where sensitive habitat will thrive.
The Port of San Diego, the city, and Pacifica Companies are working together on this project that will attract conventioneers, visitors and residents alike.
The Chula Vista harbor offers three waterfront parks: Bayside Park, Bayfront Park and Marina View Park. The parks feature recreational amenities including volleyball courts, children’s playgrounds, walking and bicycle paths, picnic tables, expansive grass areas and public art.
Chula Vista harbor is home to two marinas with a combined 925 slips. The harbor’s close proximity to Mexico makes it a popular spot for visiting recreational vessels. In addition to boating, the marina area features restaurants, shops and offices.
“Konoids,” located at the entrance to the yacht harbor, is one of the Port’s first public art placements. By sculptor Kenneth Capps, this set of three steel sculptures resembling inverted truncated cones provides a sense of place for the Chula Vista waterfront.
