Opportunity Awaits On Port and Chula Vista Waterfront

Labels: Press ReleasesNews

cvbmp1The Port of San Diego has investment opportunities on the Chula Vista waterfront for developers and other business people who want to be part of one of the largest waterfront development projects in the state.

The opportunities are described in a new marketing brochure on the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan, which will unfold on the shores of South San Diego Bay.

The master plan, which is awaiting final approval from the California Coastal Commission, is a collaboration between the Port, the City of Chula Vista and Pacifica, a private developer.

Envisioned is the redevelopment of 556 acres in Chula Vista, San Diego County's second largest city. Included will be up to 1,600 hotel rooms, resort and conference center, three smaller hotels ranging from 250 to 750 rooms, 1,500 residential condominiums, including affordable units, a mix of office and commercial uses, and scenic gathering spaces around the harbor. Parks, public promenades and bike trails are planned throughout the bay-front project.

The bay-front development is projected to generate $1.3 billion for the region's economy over a 20-year period, including more than $11.5 million in annual tax revenues. A major resort hotel and conference center could create more than 2,000 permanent jobs and more than 6,500 construction jobs.

The brochure includes a description of the project area and types of uses designated for each section of the development. It also touts Chula Vista's location - just 15 minutes away from San Diego International Airport - and it notes that the city offers panoramic views of Mexico to the south and the City of San Diego to the north.

The Port of San Diego was created by the state legislature in 1962. Since then, it has invested $1.7 billion in public improvements in its five member cities – Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego.

The Port District oversees two maritime cargo terminals, two cruise ship terminals, 17 public parks, the Harbor Police Department and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub tenant businesses around San Diego Bay.
