Development Projects
The San Diego Unified Port District and the US Army Corps of Engineers has prepared the Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report (EIS/EIR) for the San Diego Harbor Deepening Project (Central Navigation Channel. The Corps is the lead Federal agency responsible for complying with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The San Diego Unified Port District (SDUPD) is the local lead state agency and project proponent responsible for complying with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This environmental document is written in compliance with NEPA, CEQA and other applicable environmental laws and regulations. The Table to the right provides the Draft EIS/EIR (Volume II) and it's technical appendices, as well as the Feasibility Report (Volume I) in PDF file format.
The purpose of the San Diego Harbor Deepening Project is to dredge the Central Navigation Channel in order to improve waterborne commerce in San Diego Bay. Due to depth limitations, deep draft vessels loaded to full capacity cannot call on the Port of San Diego until partially unloading at other ports first. In addition, deep draft vessels cannot be loaded to maximum capacity while in the Port of San Diego, and thus the efficiency of the port is lessened. Therefore, the project calls for dredging the Central Navigation Channel to allow full utilization of the port by deeper vessels, attract a greater variety of ships and cargo to San Diego Bay and it would allow greater utilization of portions of the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. The dredged material would be disposed at an approved ocean disposal site.
