What is RSS?

Port of San Diego RSS Feeds

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a web feed technology that allows people to have updated, summarized content delivered to them without having to access a web site first. It removes the hassle of having to check web sites regularly in order to stay up-to-date by sending you headlines, news summaries, and condensed journal entries. In addition, you subscribe only to the content you want to see so it's completely personalized. Best of all, the vast majority of RSS feeds on the internet are available for free. The Port of San Diego provides RSS feeds for everything from maritime to development projects. Here is an easy to understand video on RSS from the nice folks at Commoncraft.com.

How can I use RSS?

Since RSS uses a special XML-based format, news reader software is needed to easily download and display the information. News readers allow people to quickly subscribe to RSS feeds they wish to follow and, in turn, display formatted headlines from the sources choose. Most news readers are free and might already be built in to your operating system. Search the internet for more information.
