Port of San Diego Recaps South Bay Strategic Forum with Video, Comments

A group of mostly South San Diego Bay leaders recommended a list of goals and improvements for their region at a Strategic Planning Forum held by the Port of San Diego on September 26, 2011.

Among their goals are the development of the National City and Chula Vista bay fronts, investment in roads and other infrastructure and an increase in tourism.

The forum was the second strategic planning meeting held by the port. Held at National City's Pier 32 Marina, the forum drew 75 current and former elected officials, as well as leaders in labor, business education, the environment and civic affairs.

The forum held in National City followed an August 16, 2011, Port Strategic Planning meeting at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier in San Diego that concentrated primarily on the North Bay.

The Port of San Diego was created by the state Legislature to manage San Diego Bay and surrounding waterfront land in December 1962. The Port has been responsible for $1.7 billion in public improvements in its five member cities—San Diego, Chula Vista, Coronado, National City and Imperial Beach.

The Port oversees two maritime cargo terminals, two cruise ship terminals, 17 public parks, various wildlife reserves and environmental initiatives, a Harbor Police department and the leases of more than 600 tenant and sub-tenant businesses around San Diego Bay.
