Port of San Diego Video Channel In Running For Webby Award
Wednesday, 10 February 2010
Contact: John Gilmore (619) 686-7206, (619) 341-5684
The Port of San Diego's video channel series "Port Matters" has made the online film and video short list in the "News & Politics: Series" category of the 14th Annual Webby Awards.
"This means from the thousands of entries submitted during the call for entries, your work faired the best in our reviewing process and will be moving to the next stage of judging," said David-Michel Davis, Executive Director of the Webby Awards, in an e-mailed announcement to the Port's Communications and Community Services Department.
The Webby Awards are the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet including Web sites, interactive advertising and online film and video.
The Port's entry will now be further evaluated by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences for consideration of a Webby Award.
Barbara Moreno and Glenn Batuyong of the Port's Communications and Community Services Department produced the videos in-house. The team is supervised by CJ Lucke, Community Services Coordinator.
The video topics range from environmental studies on copper paint in the bay, civic history, such as the legacy of San Diego's Tuna Cannery industry, public art, including the Urban Trees 6 exhibit along the Embarcadero, and community service, such as the National Veteran's Affairs Summer Sports Clinic and Operation Clean Sweep, organized by the San Diego Port Tenant's Association.
"I look at the port as a community," said Ronald W. Powell, Director of Communications. "We have environmental stories, public safety stories, business stories, recreational stories and government stories to tell. Local news outlets have cut down on staff dramatically as a result of the downturn in the economy. Those that used to tell those stories are no longer there. We have to fill the void," Powell said.
The 14th Annual Webby Awards will be handed out on June 14, 2010.
