Port of San Diego Video Channel In Running For Webby Award

The Port of San Diego's video channel series "Port Matters" has made the online film and video short list in the "News & Politics: Series" category of the 14th Annual Webby Awards.

"This means from the thousands of entries submitted during the call for entries, your work faired the best in our reviewing process and will be moving to the next stage of judging," said David-Michel Davis, Executive Director of the Webby Awards, in an e-mailed announcement to the Port's Communications and Community Services Department.

   

Video Provides Inside Look at Port of San Diego, Its Tenants and Partners

The Port of San Diego has produced a 16-minute video designed to provide a brief history of the Port as well as provide an inside look at its tenants and partners.

The video was produced to coincide with the swearing in of Robert "Dukie" Valderrama as this year's Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners. The video contains commentary from former State Sen. Jim Mills, the co-author of the state legislation that created the Port in 1962. It also contains as a behind-the-scenes look at the Working Waterfront, including Navy shipbuilding at NASSCO/General Dynamics and Marine Group Boat Works of Chula Vista, servicing the military, superyachts and commercial vessels.

Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Robert “Dukie” Valderrama said his priorities for the coming year will include boosting the Port of San Diego’s maritime business, advancing development of the Chula Vista and San Diego bay fronts and seeing the opening of the new Broadway Cruise Ship Terminal. (Courtesy: Dale Frost)The newly installed Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners said his priorities for the coming year will include boosting the Port of San Diego’s maritime business, advancing development of the Chula Vista and San Diego bay fronts and seeing the opening of the new Broadway Cruise Ship Terminal.

Robert "Dukie" Valderrama detailed his goals while declaring his theme for 2010 as “the year of our partners,” which include more than 600 tenants and subtenants of the Port of San Diego, and others such as cruise lines, shipping companies, the military, the airport, the Port’s member cities and organizations such as the Environmental Health Coalition

“The Port of San Diego could not exist without its partners,” Valderrama told more than 100 people who attended the annual swearing-in luncheon at the Kona Kai Resort. Because of them, the Port is able to fulfill its mission and its roles as an economic engine, community service provider, environmental steward and provider of public safety.”

(Courtesy: Colin McDonald)The Port of San Diego's annual swearing-in luncheon will be held Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, when Robert "Dukie" Valderrama will assume his position as Board Chairman. He replaces Stephen P. Cushman, who will continue his service on the Board of Port Commissioners.

The newly appointed Commissioner from Coronado, Louis M. Smith, also will be sworn in, along with Commissioners Scott Peters, who will be this year's Vice Chairman, and Stephen Padilla, who will serve as the Board's secretary. Smith will be sworn in by Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka; Padilla of Chula Vista will be sworn in by Clayton Tschudy and Peters will be sworn in by his wife, Lynn Gorguze. Valderrama will be sworn in by his daughter, Carmel.
